Banner image, top: “Gassed” John Singer Sargent’s monumental painting at the Imperial War Museum, was commissioned by the British Government to “contribute the central painting for a Hall of Remembrance for the World War.” In 1918, he found his subject matter at a dressing station in a French village where British soldiers, blinded by mustard gas, were given first aid.
